Stipple Drawing
Stipple is a technique in which you use dots to create the value or shading.
Put your dots closer together to create dark values, and farther apart to create light values. Areas that are meant to be white should be left without dots.
Below: this is a good example. Notice the nice range of values, the background, and the good use of space. This was also created from a photo, not from a drawing, or computer generated image.
Below: This isn’t a great example. The use of a heavy outline is undesirable. Also, no background was used.
The Assignment:
You will create a stipple picture.
You will work from a photograph. Please no logos, symbols, words, or characters you didn’t invent.
You will draw it on an 11”x17” paper in pencil first. Shade it using dots.
You will include a background.
You will not make up a background.
You may only use ONE pen at a time!
Erase out the pencil when you are done.
Don’t color in large areas using lines; ONLY use dots.
